Meet the custodians

After spending over 20 years living in London restoring Victorian and Georgian houses — including one dating back to the 18th century — Caroline and Julian returned to New Zealand and saw the opportunity, and responsibility, in Christchurch’s renewal. That experience continues to shape how they approach restoration today.

Villa & Co is owned and operated by Caroline Cookson, originally from Christchurch, and Julian Cookson, born in the UK.

While they understand the pressures of housing demand and the growth of townhouses, they felt increasingly uncomfortable with how much character and history was being lost to development that often lacked thought, proportion, or longevity.

Their passion lies in meeting owners of remarkable homes, hearing their stories, and working with skilled tradespeople and artisans who understand character construction - people who know when to repair rather than replace. Sustainability, quality materials, and craftsmanship are central to every project.
