One of St Albans’ enduring heritage villas, 117 Champion Street has lived many lives, from its early beginnings on the old Gresford Estate to its careful revival for the next century.

A home with history

117 Champion Street began life as part of the old Gresford Estate — a once substantial landholding that shaped much of what is now St Albans.

As Christchurch expanded in the early 1900s, the estate was gradually subdivided into residential sections, giving rise to a neighbourhood of elegant timber villas and tree-lined streets.

This home remains a quiet reminder of that early chapter.

The first chapter

One of the villa’s earliest notable residents was Inspector Gillies, a respected Christchurch police inspector known for his role in a high-profile attempted murder case in the early 1900s.

It’s one of the many layers of story that gives this home its enduring sense of presence.

Custodianship, not commodity

In more recent decades, the home came into the care of Bill and Jane Demeter — passionate advocates for the heritage, community spirit and architectural character of St Albans.

They believed 117 Champion Street was one of the last true heritage villas remaining in this pocket of the city, and cared for it with remarkable attention.

Period details were preserved, original character was honoured, and the home was treated not as a commodity, but as a responsibility.

“They would only pass the home on to someone who would protect it.”
